Summer haircare tips from celebrity hairdresser Alain Larivée

Summer months often remind us of times at the beach, or hanging outside on a patio with friends, while drinking a cosmo. For many people, however, summer is also the time for a constant battle to tame frizz, maintain bounce or repair damaged hair. Read on, as Alain Larivée, the Canadian Creative Consultant for the John Frieda Professional Haircare division of KAO Brands Company, gives Bohemia Magazine‘s readers some tips to maintain that fresh summer do.

Even though Alain Larivée is one of the go-to hairstylists in Canada, do not judge his haircutting abilities on his own personal coiffure. “I am the type of guy who is always in desperate need of a haircut,” says Larivée. “We just don’t have the time!”

In his 24 years in the industry, Larivée, who is from Northern Ontario, has traveled the world and created an international client base. Still, he states that even though he has “done the big salon thing, [with multiple] stylists,” he prefers the one-on-one approach in his Montreal-based salon CAJH (Cheveux Alain Justin Hair), which he runs with his husband Justin Voss.
Since he was recruited as the Canadian Creative Consultant for the John Frieda Professional Haircare division of KAO Brands Company in 2007, Larivée has been a hairstylist at the last two Gemini Awards and three Genie Awards, as well as many other Canadian events. He recently returned from a trip to Toronto where the John Frieda team styled Elaine Lui, host of Lainey Gossip on CTV’s etalk, as well as her crew, for her sixth annual S.M.U.T. Soirée – an event where the talk show host dishes on celebrity gossip.

Larivée has cut and styled the hair of many celebrities, including Nina Dobrev of Vampire Diaries fame, Sarah Polley, Shannon Tweed and Wendy Crewson, to name a few.

“As much as superstars are superstars, they are still human beings, they are still people. [...] they have basic hair care needs [too],” he says. And the number one hair-related problem that women have is not taking the time to analyze and determine their hair type: be it oily or dry, straight or curly, the list goes on. This can affect the cut and style you are trying to achieve.

“If we take, for example, the summer time, the number one problem people are dealing with is humidity,” says Larivée. “Curls are in this year, and we are seeing a lot of beach waves, easy styling care-free hair. But there is always the woman who really likes to blast out her [coiffure] and have that really straight shiny hairdo; the issue is: how do I solve this?”
Larivée explains that women often go to their existing tried-and-tested solutions that have achieved the desired look in the past, but are not necessarily working now. For those seeking that pin-straight look, Larivée suggests using a keratin protein-based product, including sprays.

Prepping your hair prior to any styling with proper shampoo and conditioner is important too. Make sure it’s something that will benefit your hair type and the style you are trying to achieve. “I don’t expect everyone to pick up the bottle and read the labels,” says Larivée. “But if you take the time to read the instructions on the back of the bottle, [...] that’s a good starting point.”

Larivée also stresses that women should find the right hairstylist, and not just someone who is following the trends. “My famous quotation is ‘Trends are meant to influence, not dictate.’ And that is what you need to be aware of as a consumer – this is the trend, but does it work for my hair type?”
As for when he cuts his clients’ hair, Larivée’s reflex product is putting in a serum after a shampoo and conditioner. “The serum will help seal up the cuticle of the hair, and comes out with the next shampoo,” he says. “When worked through wet hair, it will help you hold your style and will control the cuticle of the hair.”

A new favourite is the Touch-up Flyaway Tamer by John Frieda. Resembling a mascara brush, Larivée explains that the product (which contains Inca Inchi oil) helps strengthen hair and repair damage, including those flyaway baby hairs. “I won’t do a photo shoot without it, or a live television broadcast. [...] Every time I try it out on somebody new, it ends up in their purse,” he says.
Larivée believes that his greatest accomplishment to date is his appointment as the Canadian Creative Consultant for John Frieda. There, Larivée works with other big names in the hair industry, including Luigi Murenu and Harry Josh.
“It’s really cool to find myself in a position where I work for a company that has a strong basic philosophy that matches my personal philosophy –[providing] quality hair care, transformative hair care, listening to and analyzing, and identifying people’s needs and solving them. I think that is what the big part of my success is.”

Il y a une personne qu'aucune femme ne tromperait pour tout l'or du monde. À qui nous avons dit, souvent dès notre première rencontre: à la vie, à la mort, chéri. Qui? Mais notre coiffeur, pardi! Pour les heureuses élues qui en ont un, bien sûr. Les autres, l'âme en peine, errent, éternellement insatisfaites. Portrait du rapport amour-haine que nous entretenons toutes avec notre coiffeur.

«Mon coiffeur? Mais je l'aime! D'amour!» Rebecca Anderson ne se fait pas prier pour louanger les multiples talents de son coiffeur chéri. Il faut dire qu'elle le suit, littéralement, depuis plus de 10 ans. De salon en salon, de quartier en quartier, malgré tous ses déplacements, elle lui a toujours été fidèle. Toujours.

À l'écouter parler, on dirait presque qu'elle parle d'un amant. «Je l'aime, parce qu'il comprend ce que je veux, dit-elle. Il n'essaye pas de me changer. Il respecte qui je suis! Et quand je le quitte, je n'ai pas l'impression d'être quelqu'un d'autre.»

Le tromperait-elle? «Non, jamais.»

Catégorique, vous dites? Il faut dire que Rebecca ne l'a pas toujours eu facile avec les coiffeurs. La dynamique trentenaire se souvient encore, quand, enfant, elle sortait du salon, en pleurant, systématiquement. «En Nouvelle-Écosse, tout le monde avait de gros cheveux, se souvient-elle en riant. Plein de spray net. Ça me traumatisait. Je détestais aller chez le coiffeur. Chaque fois, je rentrais chez moi en pleurs.» Depuis qu'elle a fait la rencontre d'Alain, de CAJH Maîtres Coiffeurs, c'est le bonheur. «Lui, je lui fais confiance. Il a toujours dépassé mes attentes...»

Même son de cloche de la part de Laurence Pasteels, une coquette brunette aux longs cheveux légèrement colorés. «Quand t'es control freak comme moi, tu cherches quelqu'un qui va t'écouter, te comprendre. Pas dire: «Oui, oui, mais n'en faire qu'à sa tête».» D'où son coup de foudre pour Roxanne, de chez Narcisse et Echo. «Quand je l'ai trouvée, ça a tout de suite cliqué. Non seulement on s'amuse, mais en plus elle ne va jamais me rater.»

Il faut dire que nous cherchons toutes des qualités différentes chez notre coiffeur. Pour Rebecca, c'est l'effet-surprise, dans la mesure où le résultat ne la dénature pas. Laurence aime sentir «qu'elle le vaut bien», dit-elle en parodiant la pub de L'Oréal. L'ex-publicitaire Anne Darche, spécialiste des comportements des consommateurs, avoue quant à elle: «Pour moi, la qualité des magazines est importante! C'est parce qu'il y a quelque chose «d'aspirationnel», chez le coiffeur», justifie-t-elle.

La psychologue Annette Richard n'est pas surprise d'entendre que les femmes ont de grandes attentes quand on parle de coiffeur. «C'est relié à notre apparence, notre image corporelle. Bien sûr, on peut se raisonner et se dire que ce n'est qu'une coupe, mais quand ça touche à notre image, ce n'est jamais à prendre à la légère. Cela touche qui l'on est, intimement.»

En prime, nos coiffeurs traversent souvent avec nous des moments charnières de nos vies. «Un mariage, un début de grossesse, des funérailles. Nous vivons beaucoup d'émotions avec nos clients, c'est sûr qu'on établit un rapport spécial», fait valoir le coiffeur Alain Larivée. D'où la fidélité, donc, comme suite à cette intimité tissée au fil des ans.

Des hommes aussi fidèles?

Vrai, les hommes seraient aussi fidèles à leurs coiffeurs que les femmes. Chez Dru, certains suivent les propriétaires depuis 30 ans. Hommes comme femmes. À la blague, on dit même que les hommes seraient plus fidèles à leur coiffeur qu'à leur femme... Mais est-ce si vrai? Les observateurs en doutent. «On ne peut pas négliger que, culturellement, il existe davantage d'exigences, en terme de normes et d'apparence, pour les femmes. Pas une femme ne peut être insensible à ça», reprend la psychologue Annette Richard.

La psychanalyste Marie Claire Lanctôt Bélanger, attrapée par pur hasard à la sortie de son fidèle coiffeur (pour qui elle traverse la ville depuis 30 ans), abonde dans le même sens. «Le coiffeur travaille à nous rendre désirables, analyse-t-elle à froid. C'est assez bizarre quand on y pense: il travaille pour que les autres hommes nous désirent.» En allant chez le coiffeur, poursuit-elle, les femmes envoient aussi un message à qui veut bien le voir. «Faire attention à ses cheveux, c'est dire que je fais attention à moi. Il y a quelque chose de la non-négligence et de la désirabilité.» Et puis, ultime paradoxe, signale-t-elle: «Le coiffeur, c'est finalement quelqu'un qui m'aide à être moi-même».

«Celui qui me donne une version améliorée de moi-même, renchérit Anne Darche. Ou de ce que je souhaite projeter de moi-même.»

How To Fight Frizzy Hair

Frizz. Just whispering the word we swear makes our hair start to curl, if not our toes. Humid, hot, summer weather not only makes our hair expand, but the thought of blow drying and running tools through our hair becomes an idea too hot to bare. If you do go to the trouble, by the time you've completed your AC-free commute, what was in your bathroom sleek has morphed to eek. We spoke to Alain Larivée, John Frieda Canadian creative consultant and owner of Montreal salon CAJH Maîtres Coiffeurs about how to keep hair smooth and frizz-free through summer's humid assault.

First of all, what causes hair to frizz? The cuticle of the hair wants to draw moisture in to the hair shaft, so if hair is at all dry or the cuticle is not sealed it will draw in moisture from the air. While you may think that dry, winter weather is the time when you should be doing most of your deep conditioning, summer is just as important as healthy, moisture rich hair won't be as frizz-prone as damaged where cuticles are rough and left open in the hopes of catching a drink.

"If you don't prep the hair shaft properly then you'll get frizzy results," says Larivée. He says that's why it's so important to use frizz-fighting products every step of your routine, from shampoos and conditioners to serums and stylers. These have been formulated to seal moisture into the shaft and keep the cuticle sealed and flat, so it doesn't open up and draw in moisture from the air.

Know your hair type, too. "A very common problem with fine hair is that a lot of the straightening products are really heavy and can weigh down the hair," says Larivée. "I work with [John Frieda] 3-Days Straight, which is a very light spray, and it's really, really not heavy whatsoever." For those with course strands, he recommends a three step approach: a weather proofing shampoo and conditioner in the shower and then working through the hair with a comb a style sealant cream. "The action of the comb from root to end, and spreading the hair product evenly throughout the hair shaft, the hair will behave the same all over the head," he says, "not just in the areas where your hand has touched it with the styling product."

You shouldn't be afraid to embrace your natural hair texture and miss a few straight days. "Start with a curl-inducing shampoo—working with a shampoo that will encourage the natural curl formation of the hair," says Larivée. "My number one trick is I do a mixture: 'How do I use the products I have and blend them into a product I want?' Use a styling foam, like a curl boosting foam, and into your foam put the size of a dime of a straightening lotion in order to get frizz control. Your giving your curl the anti-frizz properties you want to have in your styling products. Comb it throughout your hair and let your hair dry naturally and your hair will stay beautiful until you wash it." And while you've likely heard this before, he can't emphasize enough the importance of leaving hair alone. "When you are letting your hair dry naturally, as it dries, don't play with it," he says. "Once it's fully dry the curl formation will hold into the hair shaft."

Technique is also important and Larivée says to take special care with how you form wet hair when letting it dry naturally. Start with adding your serum or styling product to sopping wet hair. Hair will feel smoother because the moisture has been locked into the shaft. "Preserve that feeling by sculpting the hair into its formation, if you come in and start scrunching the hair as you're drying you're going to look like Bon Jovi did in the '80s," laughs Larivée. "If you want to add motion and volume to the hair, what I usually try and tell people is squish the hair and leave it in clumps, leave the hair in its beautiful formation, don't rub fingers through it and scrunch it. Scrunch equals 1980s, and squeeze equals more where we're at as far as style goes."

If you are going to go the heat styling route, don't try and take shortcuts by flat ironing large sections of hair. "With thick sections, you cook the two outer layers, and the middle part never gets smooth because it never gets enough heat," says Larivée. "Be methodical—work section by section. Take the time, do it right and just touch it up as you need." And don't ignore the cool button on your dryer, it closes the hair shaft sealing in shine and helping the cuticle lie flat.

Lastly, Larivée has a reminder: "If you're going to the beach, if you're going to be playing out in the sun, hanging out in backyard, make sure your hair is protected from the elements. The nastier you are to your hair, the more often you're going to have to go to the salon is the bottom line."

Washing minus the suds

Dry shampoos can save time and add oomph!

The latest beauty secret this season? Women needn't wash their hair everyday for a healthy, shiny look - dry shampoo is rescuing strands all over the country.

While daily bathing may be de rigueur -- thank goodness! -- there's a dirty little secret women are increasingly adopting to cut down time spent on their 'do.
This growing market is dry shampoo, which allows users to forgo everyday lathering and still look fabulous and even feel fresh. What's more, some products even promise to add body and volume to limp locks.
We hold the fat on our lattes, find our faux glow in a bottle, so why not get a shampoo without the rinse? Women's ever-busy lifestyles require it, says writer Kelsey Malenchak, the creator of Toronto-based fashion and beauty blog The-dressingroom.ca.
"So many of us have jam-packed schedules that it becomes nearly impossible to always look done-up," points out Malenchak, who uses a dry product five times a week. "When you think of all the time we spend washing and styling our hair, using dry shampoos can give hours back."
Blow-dry bars becoming more and more popular is another reason women turn to no-rinse treatments, says Alain Larivee, John Frieda's Canadian creative consultant and owner of Cajh hair salon in Montreal.
Women want to extend these "investments" as much as possible, he explains, referring to the good old days when women first used mass marketed dry shampoos to hold onto to their salon-derived '60s beehives and bouffants as long as possible.
"It's really great for that trade show weekend "¦ and you got your hair done at the salon the day before leaving," says Larivee. "[Dry shampoos can] give you that extra mileage."
So how does it work? Available in wet, powder or aerosol form, dry shampoo essentially absorbs the excess oils and dirt on the scalp.
Most of these products contain rice starch, which has a translucent quality to it, and some use neutralizing odours and astringent ingredients. Customers can also find all or mostly natural products too.
Malenchak says she prefers dry sprays because they are easier to use then powders; however, she find the powder (if used properly) boost longevity.
"The trick [with dry sprays] is to shake the bottle after every spray. The formula separates from the gas quickly in the bottle and causes a block so it's important to shake constantly."
When it comes to powders, she offers this tip from her blog: "Try squeezing the bottle on an angle to get a puff of the powder rather than sprinkling it directly on the hair."
Deciding on what works best depends on a person's lifestyle and needs, says Charles Booth, founder of LaCoupe. "A major reason for their new popularity is that people have discovered that they give fabulous body to fine hair. And you can achieve all sorts of unique looks that are tousled and fun."
To get great results, Booth recommends using dry shampoo in moderation. He warns that if overused some of the aerosol powder sprays can make hair look dull. He suggests starting with a little, aiming near the roots and brushing it through.
Larivee agrees that brushing is key. "There's a reason they're called classic habits, it's because they are a good thing to do."
A dry history
When it comes to dry shampoo, what's old is new again. The lack of suds dates back centuries. According to the Encyclopedia of Hair: A Cultural History by Victoria Sherrow (Greenwood Press, 2006), during the slavery era in colonial United States Africans brought their own hair care methods with them to North America. To cleanse and groom strands they used what could be found in their new surroundings, including kitchens. Due to the lack of running water in homes, a form of dry shampooing was created using powder, starch or cornmeal.

Blonde ambition: Hair care tips for blondes

Advice on achieving and maintaining this season's hottest hair colour -- blonde.

Do blondes have more fun, and do gentlemen prefer them? While we may never know the answers to these questions, one thing we do know for sure is that blonde hair comes with its own set of rules on how to care for it.

“Blonde hair has a finer shaft in terms of diameter,” says Alain Larivée, owner of CAJH Maîtres Coiffeurs and Canadian creative consultant for John Frieda. “Hair has three layers, the medulla, the cortex and the cuticle and in naturally blonde hair there is no medulla.” This makes blonde hair finer, more fragile and more susceptible to dryness.

And when it comes to colouring blonde hair, you have to pay attention to hair health, texture and density, says Stacey Staley, owner of Blonde, a salon in Toronto. “Existing blondes can be more porous, delicate and dry, especially if they have been trying to find the right colour and stylist for them. And you cannot sacrifice health for colour,” she says.

And here’s some interesting findings: the folks at Garnier Nutrisse conducted research and found that the preferred shade of blonde differs around the world. Here in Canada, we tend to prefer a blonde that’s not too yellow or brassy or ashy, something that’s more beige blonde. Whereas in the United States, golden blonde is the most popular tone and in Europe, ash blonde is the hottest shade.

Whatever your blonde, here are some tips and tricks from the pros on achieving, caring and repairing your best blonde hair ever.

Problem: Blonde hair whether natural or coloured has a tendency to yellow.
Solution: Using a tone restoring shampoo and conditioner with neutralizing elements will help, says Alain. Also, stick to products that won’t create that undesired yellow tone, he adds.
Try: L’Oreal Paris Color Radiance Protecting Mask with UV Filter.

Problem: Your tresses are dry and fragile.
Solution: Natural blonde hair does tend to be fragile and if you’ve overworked it, it needs some TLC ASAP.
Try: Kerastase Ciment Thermique. “This is my favourite miracle repair product,” says Stacey. “It’s lightweight, protects against heat damage and does a mini treatment every time you blow dry or iron it in the hair.”

Le long ondoyant à la Xanadu
À mi-chemin entre le disco et le bohème, les belles du défilé de Gianfranco Ferré arboraient des ondulations soignées, d'inspiration Xanadu. «Une façon simple de donner de la volupté aux chevelures pleine longueur», constate le coiffeur. Mode d'emploi: «Pour qu'elle ait l'air en santé et soit bien lustrée, on lave et revitalise d'abord sa chevelure avec un duo traitant. Une fois essorées, on enduit ses longueurs de mousse. On sèche ensuite toute la masse avec une brosse plate. Puis, section par section, on frise les cheveux au fer à boucler de large diamètre, en concentrant le mouvement sous le menton. On laisse refroidir les boucles cinq minutes, avant de les étirer avec une brosse en poils de sanglier, pour les aérer, les gonfler et les discipliner. On termine en fixant la mise en plis sous un nuage de fixatif luminescent et léger.»

I don’t know if my blonderexia is spreading or what, but over the past few weeks, I’ve received a number of reader pleas for help with blonde hair gone brassy.
And you know what? In the same way that the Hair Club guy is not only the president but also a client, I’m not only a brassy hair fixer-upper, but a sufferer too.
That’s right—not even 24 hours ago, the talented Alain Larivée, co-owner of CAJH Maitres Coiffeurs in Montreal and Canadian creative consultant for John Frieda, kindly informed me that I maybe kinda sorta had a wee tinge of brass developing in my colour. Yep, and I just had it done too. But see, that’s the thing about brassiness. It operates in stealth mode, creeping up on you ever-so-slowly if you’re not careful, and sometimes it takes an expert to point out that yes, Houston, we have a problem. (Although you would think that somebody could’ve informed Mischa Barton, above, before hers got to this point, right?)
Anyway, you and I don’t have to suffer the same fate. When you’re a blonde, you’ve got to be vigilant, always vigilant, to protect your colour. So from one blonderexic to another, here’s how.
BLONDEXERIC TIP #1: GO FORTH AND BUY YOURSELF SOME PURPLE SHAMPOO

When you colour your hair, you’ve got a little rainbow of colour molecules (red, yellow, blue) deposited into the hair cuticle. But because they’re the smallest, it’s the blue ones that go MIA first, leaving you with the red and the yellow. And you know what those shades produce… orange! So purple shampoos and conditioners are freakin’ GENIUS, man. Being the opposite of orange, their violet pigments shut that brassiness down, restoring your colour to its former glory.
Probably the least expensive option around is the Sheer Blonde Colour Renew line from John Frieda, which is what Alain used on my hair yesterday:
There’s a shampoo, conditioner and mousse, and although they say you need to use ‘em three times to see results, I SWEAR that when I met up with a friend last night, she told me (unprompted) that my hair looked blonder. (Meaning better, of course.)

BLONDEREXIC TIP #2: BUT ALTERNATE IT WITH REGULAR COLOUR-PROTECTIVE PRODZ TOO

You only need to use the purple shampoo a few times a week (you don’t want your colour to go too far the other way, after all). Alternate it with shampoos, conditioners and masques specifically for colour-treated hair but without the violet pigment. They’ll help nourish it and ensure your locks look soft, healthy, hydrated and shiny.
In addition to the Essensity lineup I mentioned here, I’ve been using Schwarzkopf’s BlondeMe Blonde Brilliance Intense Treatment. But there are tons of options out there—just look for the words “colour-treated hair” on the label. Ojon just came out with this new range, called Color Sustain:

BLONDEREXIC TIP #3: INVEST IN A SHOWER FILTER

Another thing you can do to protect your $150-a-pop blondification investment is to make another investment: in a good shower filter. Besides the fact that the chlorine and iron deposits in our water are probably not the nicest stuff to imbibe, they can also make colour fade and look dull. And the iron, specifically, can add to the reddish, brassy tones.
It’s a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo to get that shiz outta there, and then install a filter like the one I’ve been using from Jonathan Product:

This is called the Beauty Water Shower Purification System (available at jonathanproduct.com) and seeing as I’ve been obsessed with it for years, I was overjoyed when they sent me one to try. It’s a two-step filter that takes out chlorine, synthetic chemicals and heavy metals, replacing them with healthy, pH-balanced potassium ions. Both skin and hair feel softer and hair colour lasts longer—hooray! It’s $95 and should last about six months or so… but you can also check out your local Home Depot or hardware store for similar options.
BLONDEREXIC TIP #4: GO BACK TO THE SALON FOR A TONER

Most of you who already colour or highlight your hair blonde will be familiar with toners—usually, colourists apply them all over as the final step in the process in order to tone down brassiness (yay!) and sort of help all of the tones in your hair to harmonize together. They’re gentler (semi-permanent instead of permanent colour) and deposit pigment instead of lighten, so you don’t need to worry about damaging already-coloured hair.
Although they come in all kinds of shades, in this situation your hairdresser will be using one with a violet or blue base (same principle as the shampoo) to brighten and restore your colour. Expect to pay around $40+.
BLONDEREXIC TIP #5: TRY AN AT-HOME BRASS BANISHER

You can also do the toner thing at home, thanks to a couple of products from our friends at L’Oréal Paris, who make the Colorist Secret Brass Banisher…

…or Clairol, who has Natural Instincts Brass Free:
Both are ammonia-free and can be safely used in between colourings… but just to warn you, reviews are mixed (and that’s why I chickened out of trying the L’Oréal Paris one myself). You’ll definitely want to check out Makeup Alley here and here before you take the plunge, because some peeps are saying “I LOVED IT!” and others “HOLY CRAP THIS SUCKS!” It’s hard to say whether it was a user execution thing, or if the prodz might produce iffy results on certain hair colours… so I’ll leave it with you to decide. Because I like to give you options!

For the past five days, a team of over 200 has toiled over every detail of tonight’s Genie Awards.
“Amendments have to be made to the stage, the lighting, making sure that all the cameras are
in the right places and are going to work seamlessly, so there’s a lot of preparation that goes into the show,” said Sara Morton, CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
More behind-the-scenes preparations have also been taking place at Sublime Hair Studio in
Ottawa which is finalizing preparations today for styling the hair of stars from movies such as
Incendies and Barney’s Version.
“Right now it’s quite a frenzy because we’ve got a collection of looks for red carpet that we’ve put together,” said Sonia Mirchandani, owner of Sublime.
Top-notch Montreal hair- stylist, Alain Larivée, has partnered with Mirchandani this year to style Canada’s favourite celebs’ hair at The Arc Hotel before the red carpet show kicks off at the NAC.
Mirchandani is looking forward to styling Juno-award winner Serena Ryder’s hair, while Larivée has his heart set on this year’s host, William Shatner.
“The day styling is done at the Arc Hotel. We have a studio set up for the day for the red carpet stuff, and then all the finishing stuff is done back stage (at the NAC),” said Larivée.

Patio season is finally here! And with it, the requisite flirting. Make an impression with these four runway-inspired looks. Elle Canada spoke with the experts to show you how to get them:

Since you can’t let your hair down at every fiesta, look to Yves Saint Laurent’s polished example for sophisticated chic. “This look is a quick and easy way to transform your day hair into a striking evening ’do,” says Alain Larivee, John Frieda Canadian Creative Consultant and official hairstylist of this year’s Genie Awards.

To create this look, he recommends washing hair with Luxurious Volume Full Splendour Shampoo and Conditioner to create fullness and strengthen hair from the inside out, filling in damaged areas and plumping the hair for healthy volume.

Then apply a generous amount of Luxurious Volume Bountiful Body Mousse, to increase hair’s diameter and lift at the roots for weightless, non-sticky all-day volume. After you’ve applied the mousse, with your head upside-down, use a flat or vent brush to blow-dry your hair from roots to ends.

Once hair is dry, section off a square portion of hair in the bang area starting at the hair line and going back to the crown. You will come back to this piece later, so clip it out of the way for now. Brush the rest of the hair upwards and secure in a ponytail at the crown, then backcomb your ponytail. To hide the elastic band you are using to hold your ponytail, wrap a strand of hair around the elastic and secure it using a bobby pin.

Now, grab the bang section you squared off earlier, backcomb the roots to create lift and then smooth it back and incorporate it into the ponytail section. Secure ends with bobby pins. Hold everything in place with a finishing hairspray like Luxurious Volume All-Out Hold Hairspray, which also protects against summer humidity.

Lastly, secure a barrette or slide a comb in place to create a pin-backed ridge. Finish with a final spritz of hairspray and you’re ready to dazzle them all.

As I mentioned a few days ago in Part One, Nathalie is über-freaked out about ending up with a terrible haircut, but aren’t we all?
Find out how the first consultation went!
We walked into CAJH and met hairstylist Alain Larivée. Our super-skeptical Nathalie sat down and gave me the look that says, “I hate my hair and no one can fix it!” (You know exactly what look I’m talking about.)
Alain took one look at her ‘do and asked her to describe what kind of person she is and what she does for a living because a haircut needs to suit your lifestyle. We loved this part. I suggest you talk about this sort of thing during your own hair consultation.
He suggested keeping her hair long because something told him this gal was likely to tie her hair up. No surprise there. Nathalie ties her hair up almost everyday and a short ‘do would surely leave her wallowing in her own misery.

Alain then suggested creating more layers around her face to really frame it and to keep her bangs on the side. Removing them would make her head look too long. It would also give movement from top to bottom to prevent the lamp shade effect her hair is currently suffering from (voluminous on the top, flat in the middle, and flipping out on the ends).

In terms of colour, he suggested a dark brown shade with highlights, which require less maintenance than streaks. It’s like he read her personality, which is what your hairdresser should do before you let anyone whip out scissors to slice and dice your ‘do.

Three common hair hassles - solved!

THE PROBLEM
Dampness gives you a major case of the frizzies.
THE SOLUTION A salon-inspired blowout and style. The first step to good hair on a wet day starts in the shower. Use a weather-proofing shampoo and conditioner to combat frizz caused by humidity. Next, comb a cream serum through your strands to fight flyaways and add polish. Using a ceramic brush (it retains more heat), blow-dry your hair in sections, from root to tip. “Be sure to do this neatly and in smaller sections for best results,” says Alain Larivee, Canadian creative consultant for John Frieda. To properly seal the hair cuticle, which keeps it smoother longer, hold the nozzle down when blow-drying in the direction of hair growth. Going from day to night? Use a flatiron for sleek, shiny strands or hot rollers for big curls. Lock in your ’do with a moisture-barrier hairspray.

Mornings at home are busier than rush hour.
THE SOLUTION An easy updo. Spending even two minutes on your tresses can have a big impact. Start by squeezing a dime-size amount of serum into your palms, rubbing your hands together and running it through dry hair. “It will help distribute the product evenly rather than in one spot,” suggests Larivee. Next, take a boar-hair flat brush and detangle your hair from the ends up (it will remove tangles fast rather than building them up at the ends) and smooth out any sleep souvenirs, such as cowlicks and knots. Brush your hair back and tie it into a ponytail at the nape of your neck; backcomb the ponytail, twist the ends and secure them around the base with bobby pins. “It’s a quick chignon that’s office-appropriate,” he says. Finish with a strong-hold hairspray to keep it all in place.

Greasy roots weigh you down.
THE SOLUTION Wash less. Washing your hair less frequently can help regulate your oil-producing sebaceous glands. “Overactive glands can result from overstimulation,” says Larivee. If you’ve been washing your hair every day, try changing it to every other day, then two days in between and so on. “Wear your hair back in a braid or ponytail until your scalp adapts,” advises Larivee. Switching to a clarifying shampoo can also help. “It will remove oil, dirt and product buildup and prevent coloured hair from fading,” he says. If you can’t stand the feel of an oily scalp, try dry shampoo. “It has a clay-based formulation, which absorbs oil and gives your hair a bit of thickness and lift at the roots,” he says. Just spray it on greasy areas and brush it through well until it’s no longer visible.

On Tuesday, I had the good fortune to be invited to the Toronto International Film Festival 2010 Essentials Lounge for Media at the Ra Sun Spa (388 Richmond Street West, Toronto) for a little pre-TIFF pampering. Organized by super cool babe Esther Garnick, this lounge was catering to media who tend to work long hours over the ten day festival.

When I arrived, the awesome Lisa from Brill Communications was on hand with her clients from Ecco Shoes who gave my patent leather heels a nice little buff while I watched the super hot ET Canada producer Angie Smith interview a Playmate. (Watch it here.)

Then while sipping on a VitaminWater, I got my nails did in Essie’s “Lollipop”- a fab bright red.

I wish I had time to take advantage of the other services, which included eyebrow threading, spray tanning for legs, underarm waxing, and hair styling with Alain Larivée from John Frieda.

We each left with an incredible goody bag filled with great hair products form John Frieda, a bottle of my fave VitaminWater (orange), a couple great colours of Essie nail polish, a mini Ecco shoe care kit, and my TIFF lifesaver, Elizabeth Grant’s Socializer.

Just as I was leaving, Esther was explaining to author and Globe & Mail columnist Leah McLaren how she had inspired the lounge from an article that she had written in 2005 and that Esther had held onto ever since. So great to see how an idea can be made into a reality.

Thank you Esther for a wonderful afternoon treat. See you on the red carpet!

Alain Larivée, consultant en création pour John Frieda et propriétaire du salon CAJH Maîtres coiffeurs, à Montréal, rappelle que «les cheveux droits n'ont pas tousla même texture et qu'il est essentiel d'utiliser des soins adaptés.» On choisit doncdes shampoings et des revitalisants volumisants si on a les cheveux fins et des formuleslissantes s'ils sont épais.

Entre les lavages habituels, le coiffeur conseille d'utiliser un shampoing sec pouréliminer l'excès de sébum et redonner du corps à la chevelure.

Les astuces coiffure
Pour gagner du temps, on lave et on sèche nos cheveux le soir, on les attache enqueue de cheval (sans trop serrer) et on dort sur une taie d'oreiller en soie. Au réveil,il suffira de leur donner un coup de fer plat pour obtenir un lissage parfait.
On actionne le sèche-cheveux au sortir de la douche. «Même partiel, le séchage à l'air libre risque de créer de mauvais plis qui seront difficiles à faire disparaître», prévient Alain Larivée.
Utilisés en trop grande quantité, les produits coiffants peuvent alourdir et ternir les chevelures droites. La recette infaillible de notre expert? Appliquer une noix de gel ou de mousse à la racine pour maximiser le volume, puis enduire les longueurs de lotion lissante afin de faciliter la mise en plis.
Plongeant, dégradé, avec ou sans frange, agrémenté d'une raie au centre ou sur lecôté: le carré est la coupe star des cheveux droits!

Les cheveux droits

Le volume fait souvent défaut, surtout quand on a les cheveux fins.

I thought it would be fun to attend John Frieda's Sheer Blonde Experience event last week since I'm a...brunette. Unfortunately my wicked plan for world domination failed as a good number of brunettes showed up at the very same event. John Freida even introduced a new liquid shine illuminating conditioner for brunettes, ha! The evening was pretty fun actually: Josie Dye from Cosmo TV was the host - and did she glow: the hair, the sparkly dress, the energy...I suddenly felt the need to sit down and drink before moving towards the first hair consultants station where I got a quick personalized consultation. The consultant mentioned that sometimes dark hair needs a little help to catch the light and look shiny - which is very true for me: straighteners definitely take the shine away -

Moving to the next station while sipping water - I swear - and Alain Larivee, one of the John Frieda's hair stylists, styled my hair using an Infiniti Conair flat-iron. Now honestly, when I saw "Conair" I thought this was not going to do any good to my hair, but make no mistake this is not your basic drugstore flatiron anymore. It straightened my hair very nicely. But I kept the best for last. My hair has a new best friend: the Frizz-Ease Glossing Mist which gave my hair a really smooth and shiny finish. And I was still sober. So I know I wasn't dreaming.

You know when I wrote I kept the best for last in my previous paragraph....well I lied. No, the very best was watching one of the guests pole dancing. Did I mention that guest was a guy? Awesomeness.

What to do? Linzon suggests women try minoxidil, which has been proven to stimulate hair growth. It works by keeping the hair in the growing (anagen) stage for longer, and is available over-the-counter in a two per cent solution or at five per cent by prescription. Many women find new hair growth occurring within three months — but it may not work for everyone.

Consult your doctor to determine if hair loss is hereditary, hormonal, related to illness or even the result of medication, including vitamin supplements. "Vitamin A in high doses can cause hair loss," she warns.

As for the hair you've got, there's never been a better time to ask your stylist for a cut that embraces your hair's natural tendency rather than fighting against it. For example, if you've got curly hair, a modern, pin-straight blowout might look gorgeous, but it won't last a minute when you're hit with a hot flash.
Alain Larivée, Canadian creative consultant for John Frieda, says the best way to stop your roots from getting frizzy or limp during a sudden sweat is preparation. "You need to use products formulated to shield the hair against the elements," he says. "They should have a combination of silicones and conditioning agents to create a barrier around the hair shaft."
In layperson terms, this means looking for hair products that have "anti-humidity" and "anti-frizz" emblazoned across them in gigantic flashing letters. Find one that smells good, since you'll be using it non-stop for a while.

Hot hair styles for hot flashes

One of the easiest styles to work with is a mid-length shag — flattering when down and easy to pin up or pull back into a messy ballerina knot during really hot moments. You may be set to 400 degrees, but at least you can look chic while blazing. (Insert "you'll literally be the hottest gal in the office joke" here.)
Recommended items for your body-building, hot flash survival hair kit include: a volumizing shampoo with protein, Velcro rollers (roll up, not under) and a dry shampoo for your purse to give limp roots a lift.

Last night I was lucky enough to score an invite to the Genie Awards, a.k.a Canada’s version of the Oscars. (My partner in crime was my good pal and fellow ex-magazine editor Marilisa of The Chic Storm—make sure to check out her blog, it’s a must-read!)

Our invite was courtesy of John Frieda, whose talented stylists were responsible for many of the gorgeous hairstyles.

More to come on those soon, including how-tos—but first can we talk about Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson? Diane was there last night to support her man, who ended up winning the Genie for Best Actor.
I can see why she digs him—not only is he handsome but he’s also totally modest: when he stepped up to accept the award he said “I can’t believe I won something!” THEN, to the delight of the audience, in his acceptance speech he told Diane he loved her. Awwww…
Sadly I didn’t have the chance to get all up in their face to gawk or ask about beauty tips—I don’t think Diane was down with the after-party at The Guvernment—but I DID score a how-to from John Frieda’s creative consultant Alain Larivée.

“This is a very easy, DIY look that is on-trend for this summer and is easily acheived at home,” says Alain.

Apply Frizz-Ease Straight Fixation to wet hair.
Blow dry using your fingers [to rake through the hair] from root to tip to achieve a non-finished natural wave.
Create a centre part, leaving a few front strands loose to acheive the ‘undone’ look.
Pull the rest of your hair back to the nape of your neck. Take hair and wrap it into a circular tight bun and secure with bobby pins.
Finish the style with Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Hair Spray.

With only two days before TIFF officially begins, I spent the morning working hard to get ready for the madness -- you know, by getting my nails done, my hair styled and my eyebrows threaded.
I realize that getting pampered doesn't sound like a priority when there's so much still to be done before TIFF starts, but looking good will help me better cover the festival (or at least that's what I told my editor).
I was invited to attend the first ever "Essentials Lounge For Media" created by Esther Garnick PR as a way to prepare journalists for all the long hours and late nights covering screenings, press conferences and red carpets.
"Everything in here is useful to that 10-day push. No one really has the time to get their hair treated or their nails done or their shoes looked after or anything else when they're in the thick of things," says Garnick.
"It's the trenches, it really is for the media. Everyone's got to wave hi, speak loudly, shake hands -- they've got to stand out, too, because they've got to get their sound bites and interviews and get their stories."
Held at downtown Toronto's Ra Sun Spa, my first "assignment" of the day was eyebrow threading. I've heard about this ancient method of hair removal and how effective it can be, but was always a little scared it would hurt. I've instead been opting for waxing, which is probably just as painful but over much quicker.
I told my esthetician Sharly I was apprehensive but her keen eye and expert thread yielding made it a (nearly) pain-free experience.
Next up was an express manicure with Tina, who did a rock star job painting my nails a deep purple. It was hard to completely relax though when all I could think about was how the work was piling up back at the office and my email inbox was overflowing. But with wet nails, I had to resist checking my Blackberrry. Maybe I should paint them more often (!)
Before leaving it was time to get a quick touch-up on my hair with Alain Larivée, the Canadian Creative Consultant for John Frieda. He showed my how to keep the humidity from ruining my ultra straight hair, which includes using the right products and only flat ironing small sections at a time.
But as much as I love my straight locks, Larivée says curls and waves are going to be ruling the red carpet this year when it comes to the celebrities. Half up, half down looks will also be popular, with an emphasis on glam.

Sure, as moms-to-be our skin may be glowing, but our hair? Lifeless, colourless, dry and just plain blah. It’s not all that bad, says Alain Larivée, Canadian creative consultant for John Frieda. Here’s what we need to know to keep our hair looking its best both during and after pregnancy.

How do pregnancy hormones affect our hair?
Every pregnant woman notices very obvious changes in her hair during and after her pregnancy. It's absolutely normal to see changes during these miracle-making times. I've seen curly hair go straight, fine hair thicken, hair colour change and hair lines grow halfway down some women’s necks during gestation. I've also often seen hair fall out dramatically after birth and after breastfeeding.

How can we keep our hair as healthy as possible?
First and foremost, take your vitamins, eat healthy, exercise, drink water and sleep. All these good habits will have positive impacts on your body, your baby and your hair. Quality health-infusing shampoos and conditioners are always recommended for healthier hair.

Can we color our hair while pregnant?
Avoiding on-scalp hair-colour services during the first trimester is a good idea; there are numerous off-scalp hair colouring techniques that can be performed to keep you looking good. Follow-up with weekly treatments to keep your hair looking healthy.

How do we get the most out of our hair during pregnancy?
The easiest way to deal with your hair during pregnancy is to let it grow and keep it healthy with a weekly conditioning treatment. Book a regular salon visit and have your stylist work in a stylish braid; it's a smart-looking and fashionable way to feel good and comfy in your skin. At home, tie it back in a ponytail or a bun; long hair will make you feel more feminine -- something you'll appreciate as your body changes and your belly grows.

What should we do post-pregnancy?
A simple and comforting habit is to massage your scalp for at least 20 minutes a day. This will stimulate circulation at the dermal level and promote healthy hair growth. This is also a good time to cut off some of that length; an easy, out-of-your-face hairstyle is simply more practical. There are some very effective post-pregnancy growth stimulating treatments available, but wait until you're done breastfeeding before starting these types of regiments. You don't want your baby ingesting these substances. All in all, be healthy, use good hair-care products and don't stress out over your hair during your pregnancy and after childbirth. In most cases, everything returns to normal.

Now if only those grey hairs from all the stress would just disappear...

From celebrities to runways, we've seen them everywhere; perfectly constructed curls. Here to help us achieve the same look with minimal effort is John Frieda's Canadian Creative Consultant, Alain Larivee.

Rollers and Curling Irons are coming back in a big way. Can you give us instructions on how to use them properly?

Always make sure to have a tail comb handy when styling your hair with thermal tools. By now, everyone has bought a set of hot rollers or owns a curling iron. The first step to achieve perfect, healthy-looking curls is to start with clean, blow-dried hair.

Work with untangled and combed out sections of hair. Starting at the ends, wind hair around the iron barrel or roller and use a tail comb to roll in shorter hair bits and layers as you work your way to the roots. The neater the section - the nicer the curl. The amount of hair in your section and the size of the barrel or roller will also play a role in the amount of curl you will get. Small sections on big rollers will create stronger hold and bigger curls. Big sections on smaller rollers will create tighter curls at the end with looser waves at the roots and so on. To give a little more hold make sure to add volumizing styling products before blowdrying and spray a small mist of curl-enhancing spray on each section of hair before winding.

We walked into CAJH and met hairstylist Alain Larivée. Our super-skeptical Nathalie sat down and gave me the look that says, “I hate my hair and no one can fix it!” (You know exactly what look I’m talking about.)

Alain took one look at her ‘do and asked her to describe what kind of person she is and what she does for a living because a haircut needs to suit your lifestyle. We loved this part. I suggest you talk about this sort of thing during your own hair consultation.

He suggested keeping her hair long because something told him this gal was likely to tie her hair up. No surprise there. Nathalie ties her hair up almost everyday and a short ‘do would surely leave her wallowing in her own misery.

Tired of wearing your hair the same way every day? We spoke to John Frieda Creative Consultant, Alain Larivée (and owner of CAJH Maîtres Coiffeurs in Montreal), to find out what the hair trends are for the upcoming season. Check out three über-hot styles for the summer!

Style #1: The Messy Bun

The look: A ballerina bun that is loosely tied at the back of the head, at about the occipital bone level. This works well with naturally wavy or curly hair, for a stylish ‘do that is sophisticated, not stiff!

How to get it: Start by using some mousse or styling cream on damp locks, before drying hair with a diffuser. Then, tie it at the middle of the back of the head with an elastic hair tie, and pin hair into a bun by sections, criss-crossing bobby pins for a better hold.

Style #2: The Naturally Straight Mane

The look: Hair that is straight, but not perfect. The idea is for things to look effortless—styled, but not over-styled. Note that this look calls for texture, but not too much—“which is what separates it from the “beachy” style that was so hot a few years back” says Larivée.

How to get it: Start with some smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Then, use a round brush to blow-dry hair straight by sections.

Style #3: The Sophisticated Ponytail

The look: A high enough ponytail with a lot of volume at the roots, and a bit of movement at the ends. Not necessarily curly, but not stick straight, either—a little twirl does the trick!

How to get it: You can use hot rollers to get some volume in right at the roots, and then do some gentle teasing with a fine tooth comb. Tie your hair back high enough on the head, and use a round brush and heat or heating iron to give the ends some movement.

Summer hair should look natural and sexy. Hair stylist to the stars Sally Hershberger and Canadian creative consultant for John Frieda, Alain Larivee, share their tips on how to achieve a flawless summer ‘do.

How to get gorgeous beachy waves
- Start by using a shampoo and conditioner for wavy hair, says Hershberger. They provide plenty of moisture but also support waves.
- Rake a water-based foam, like Sally Hersheberger’s Style Primer for Wavy Hair, through damp hair from the crown down to enhance and define natural waves.
- Then let hair air dry if you have the time and patience or blow dry with a diffuser.
- Call it done there or make it extra mussed and beachy with a moisturizing texture spray.
How to keep hair from getting frizzy in the humidity
- After washing your hair seal the hair cuticle with a frizz-prevention serum, says Larivee. Comb the product through just washed hair. The action of the comb moving from roots to end seals up cuticle and will ensure even distribution of product all over your hair.
- If your curls are the type that need a bit of help Larivee recommends John Frieda’s Spiral Style curl defining spray gel, which will help define and realign natural spirals and curls. Squeeze larger sections of hair together or sculpt hair and let dry naturally.
- A good thing to keep in mind is: the less you touch your hair, the less it will frizz.
- Chlorine (and hot summer sun) can be very damaging to the hair. To give your summer-damaged hair a much-needed pick-me-up try an overnight repair mask to transform and repair dry, damaged and frizzy hair.

- Low ponytails
- Headbands and scarves to accessorize
- Take long daytime hair and put it up in a loose messy French twist or chignon at night

Your skin and makeup

Summer skin needs to be well protected, while warm weather makeup should be both playful and functional. Celebrity makeup artists Chase Aston and Paul Venoit share their foolproof summer beauty tips.

- Although it’s not a rule of thumb, changing your moisturizer from an oil based formula (that adds extra hydration during the drier, colder winter months) to a water base formula in the summer, can help control excessive oil leaving the skin looking fresh and clean, says Venoit.
- If you’re heading to a pool party and still want to wear makeup choose a waterproof foundation layered over waterproof sunscreen. For your eyes, creamy, water resistant, smudge-proof and waterproof formulations of shadow, liner and mascara are best, explains Aston.
- For lips, a stain works well in hot weather. Try The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Stain in Rose Pink or one of CoverGirl’s Outlast lip stains. Layer lip balm with SPF overtop for sun protection.
- If you’ve got oily skin try applying a mattifying day cream before your sunscreen or foundation to avoid mid-day shine, says Aston. It will minimize your pores and keep shine at bay. Facial blotting tissues are also great for touchups.
- Keep all of your makeup application sheer and not too heavy. Eye colours should be smudged just along the lash line for a subtle hint of colour. Keep cheeks fresh and glowing with cheek stain. For your lips, avoid heavy glosses and solid matte hues and textures and opt for lip stains instead.

Eyes:
Bright blue and teal, sunny orange and buttery yellow

Lips:
Focus on bold lips with vibrant shades of rich pink and red
Nails:
Punchy coral, bright fuchsia and ruby red

Best trends for your hair colour: blondes, brunettes and redheads

What is it about the changing of the seasons that invites a physical transformation too? Ready for a new haircut or colour? Spring is the season of renewal and summer spells fun so these seasons mark perfect times to play with your style. Head to your hairdresser's chair for an instant update, but not before finding out which hairstyles are turning heads this season.

John Frieda's celebrity stylist Alain Larivee shares his professional perspectives on the hottest hairstyles and trends for spring and summer 2009.

Homemakers.com: What hair colour is hot now?
Alain Larivee: Spring 2009 is looking blonder than ever. You'll see rich, dimensional blondes: lighter highlights on top with darker blonde tones blended in the interior. Natural blondes can use shampoos that gradually and naturally lighten hair. If your blonde is colour-treated, try Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Tone Restoring shampoo and conditioner to keep your colour from going brassy and to help keep your hair looking salon fresh.Brunettes don't need to go blonde to be hot for spring. Brunettes: Be brave and open to change -- add dimension to your colour with highlights and definitely add shine!

Redheads: Add lighter dimensional copper effects and treat yourself to a good weekly conditioning treatment.

Homemakers.com: Which celebrities are sporting the must-have look of the season?
AL: Karinne Vanasse, a French-Canadian actress, has a fabulous haircut: a modified layered bob with feminine carefree curls -- a great spring/summer cut. Also, Jennifer Aniston always has smart hair colour and is wearing braids and different hair textures. Rihanna's smart, short and versatile cut, as well as supermodel Gisele's fringe, come to mind.

Homemakers.com: What's more popular this season – long hair or short?
AL: This season, both long and short looks are in.

Long hair is individual: layered to complement individual bone structure. Versatility is a must, meaning length depends on the hair's ability to hold different looks during the day and night.

Hot and adaptable short haircuts worn straight and shiny with beautiful definition or soft and carefree are a look that is both bold and feminine.

Homemakers.com: How can you update a hairstyle, without doing anything too crazy?
AL: Strategically adding a few layers or modifying your hair colour for the new season are fun and easy ways to add a little change to your hair.

Homemakers.com: In your opinion, which celebrity has the hottest hair right now?
AL: The perfect example of good colour, smart versatile layers and style conscious sexiness is Gwyneth Paltrow's hairstyle.

Homemakers.com: Can you offer five tips for maintaining your hair this spring?
AL:
1. The number 1 trend is healthy hair. If your hair is dry, damaged or broken, it will always be a "don't."

2. You don't need to scream to be noticed. Simply have your stylist lighten up your look for the season.

3. Embrace your curls! Find the right products to sculpt your hair without crunch or frizz.

4. Change up your look! With the help of heat styling tools like curling irons, flat irons and hot rollers, you can transform your hair. However, always protect your hair when using heat styling. New Year’s Eve is a time to let down your hair, so to celebrate 2009 in style we’re going with big, bold curls and sexy waves. We got the low down on how to achieve luscious locks from John Frieda’s Canadian Creative Consultants Howard Barr and Alain Larivée. Follow these easy steps and you’ll be the belle of the ball.
Wash your hair with a shampoo and conditioner that add weightless volume. Spritz the roots with a volumizing, blow dry spray. Flip your head over and blast your roots with a blow dryer until dry.
Set your hair in one-inch sections, in Velcro or hot rollers. This will lift the hair from the root and add the volume you’re looking for. Let hair sit in rollers for 10 minutes or until it has cooled. Gently unwind your hair from around the roller and comb through hair with a wide toothed comb.
Wrap the one-inch sections of hair around a curling iron, making sure they’re not too tight. Repeat this process with all of your hair. Gently run your fingers or a wide toothed comb through your hair.
This will give the style a more natural look. Finish off this head turning do with a generous mist of light hold hairspray. This will set your style so that it moves with you all night long.
Adding a pretty hair band or an ornate hair piece to the finished look, guarantees glam.

1. Les boucles à la folie Les spirales sont de nouveau tendance. Tantôt déliées, tantôt exubérantes ou vaporeuses, les boucles respectent toutefois une constante: elles ne sont jamais parfaites. Une fois les spirales formées, on prend donc soin de les défaire avec les doigts.

2. Le coiffé décoiffé

Vive la spontanéité des chevelures savamment décoiffées! Quelques pinces piquées ici et là, un élastique enroulé à la va-vite, et nous voilà prête à faire tourner les têtes! Surtout, on s'assure que nos cheveux conservent leur souplesse et leur brillance naturelles: on donne congé aux formules sculptantes.

3. La queue de cheval plastifiée
La queue de cheval qui ne laisse aucun cheveu dépasser est l'ultime symbole du raffinement. Alain Larivée, consultant en création pour John Frieda, suggère de finir en enroulant une mèche autour de l'élastique afin de camoufler celui-ci.

4. Les cheveux de paille
Pour la chevelure, on mise sur la texture. À l'affiche: des tignasses parfois crêpées, souvent gonflées, mais toujours d'aspect desséché. L'astuce d'Alain Larivée: après avoir donné du volume aux cheveux au moyen de rouleaux chauffants ou d'un fer à friser, on penche la tête vers l'avant et on vaporise du fixatif sur la chevelure.

5. Le chignon haut perché

On le hisse bien haut sur la tête. Pour que le chignon reste en place et que n'apparaissent pas de frisottis, Alain Larivée conseille de lisser d'abord les cheveux et de vaporiser ensuite un nuage de fixatif à tenue ferme.

With the lazy, hazy days of summer upon us, the first signs of "summer hair" appear: dull, brittle locks with split ends or out-of-control frizz. Fortunately, there are a slew of new products intended to keep hair looking healthy and sleekly styled.
Volume Control
Those blessed with curly mops know all about the dandelion puffball shape hair naturally assumes during our city's humid summers. And even a slightly wavy mane will take on a life all its own when the heat's on.
Paradoxically, it is dryness that's to blame for such bad-hair behaviour, according to Montreal hairdresser Alain Larivée, a Canadian creative consultant for John Frieda. "The sun and wind dry the hair and make it more porous," he said. "So it then soaks up the moisture it needs from the environment."
To keep your coif serenely under control, the co-owner of Cajh Maître Coiffeurs on Atwater Ave. suggests switching to a shampoo and conditioner that shield hair from the elements. "Look for one that seals the hair cuticle and locks out the humidity." The key words to look for on labels are "anti-frizz," "silicone" or "smoothing." Adding a serum, or leave-in ultra conditioner, after you rinse can add to the benefits.
Fine hair, on the other hand, goes
noodle-limp once the humidity rises. Larivée suggests going with moisturizing shampoos and conditioners that promise volume, then apply styling products with a light hand, concentrating on the ends of the hair.
Taking a Shine
Lolling by the pool or sipping cocktails on a sun-drenched terrace, you naturally reach for the sunscreen. But what about your hair?
"Protecting the hair becomes crucial in summer," said Deborah Crouse, who is responsible for training in Canada for Kérastase Paris. The company has been making the Soleil line of hair products since 1992. "Prevention really is the best way to avoid summer hair."
Like using a hair product made to go on just like sunscreen for skin. Simply spray one of the liquids, such as ultra-light Kérastase Micro Voile Protecteur (spray, $36) or Schwarzkopf Professional BC SUN UV Protection Spray (spray, $14, shown) or apply a cream or gel product with your hands.
And, just like your skin protection product, she suggests applying hair protection religiously before sun exposure and reapplying every few hours. Bonus: These products provide added moisturizing and gloss-enhancing benefits similar to a leave-in conditioner. "So hair can actually become shinier and more healthy looking after a day in the sun, providing you don't overdo the sun exposure," she said.
Hair Conditioning
A growing number of hair products, including shampoos and conditioners, include UV filters. And for those with colour-treated hair, that's a good thing, according to Clifford Albert, medical director of the Canadian Institute for Laser Surgery and a clinical instructor at McGill University. "If you have dyes in your hair the colour will be affected by light," he said. "Because there will be unwanted chemical interactions."
To keep dyed locks looking better for longer, he feels products with UV protection or that say "for colour-treated hair" can be beneficial. And if your hair colour has not been chemically enhanced, it may prevent the streaks or highlights that naturally occur after being in the sun a long time.
Don't forget that the chemicals in pool water and the salt in sea water can further strip hair of moisture. They're both forms of chloride, which is a bleach and has a drying effect, says Albert. Try an old lifeguard trick and douse your hair with freshwater just before and after a dip in the ocean. Alternatively, wear a swimming cap so water doesn't touch your tresses.
The best sun protection of all might be an old-fashioned wide-brimmed hat. "You'll not only protect your hair from the sun, but your face as well," he said.

Tired of the generic salon experience and rendered visually impaired by my too-long fringe, I decided to check out CAJH Maîtres Coiffeurs’ new location (743 Atwater, Montréal, (514) 932-6303.) I’m always a bit wary about trying a new stylist, but my worries were squashed by the rave reviews surrounding stylist, Alain Larivee and colourist, Justin Voss. As it turns out, CAJH is a Montréal salon whose reputation isn’t all hype. And their new location, like the coifs perfected by their expert hands, is cool, unique, and a breath of fresh air.
Alain and I discuss what I’d like in a hair cut. He suggests layers are the cure for my limp hair-woes, but assures me that he still wants to give me something with “a little personality.” In between deft snips of my locks and questions about my personal hair care routine, we discuss things we have in common (rescued dogs and small town upbringings) and I completely forget my haircut-anxiety; before I know it, my strawberry blonde nightmare has been transformed into a delicate dégradé of layers, which frames my face and that fits my styling habits. The best part: Larivee’s personalized approach to hair means that I might be able to replicate the truly fabulous result in my own home. Now that’s what I call getting the attention you deserve!

You gotta love them. Alain Larivee and Justin Voss have opened a totally chilled-out salon called CAJH in a loft in St. Henri. Possibly the cutest couple in town, they met while working at Au Premier and set out to create a space without the usual noise, crowds and chaos of a hairdressing salon. Larivee says he loves to work with curly hair: "I think sexy hair is curly hair. You know the type of client who walks into a salon and everybody runs away?"
That's his gal, he says.
The idea was to allow the cutters to spend more time with clients. Cappuccino and head massage is fine and dandy, he says, but the emphasis should be on the hair. Cuts are $35 to $70; colour $48 and up.
